Open Water Swimming

GENERAL

SPR Travel is organising a Malta – Comino - Malta swim on the 28th September 2019. SPR Travel is a privately owned, licenced entity, independent of any swimming club or federation.

Participants can choose to compete over two distances – 5km or 3km. Both events are open to swimmers over the age of 16. Persons under these ages will be allowed to participate at the sole discretion of the organisers after these are satisfied that said person can complete the crossing safely. The distance of the event is approximately 5km.

The event will start and finish at the sandy beach in Little Armier Bay. The starting time shall be 09.30 hours.

There will be a time limit of 3 hours and 30 minutes to finish the event, starting at the time the last participant enters the water to start his/her swim.

The organisers will provide all the equipment necessary for the safety of the participants. These will include but not be limited to a lead motorised boat, dinghies, jet skis, canoes, qualified life-saving personnel, medics and an ambulance. This notwithstanding all applicants declare that they are conscious of the risk of such events and absolve the organisers of any liability in case of injury or death. All support boats will be able to provide water to the swimmers during the course of the event.

The organisers declare that they have the necessary permits in hand from the local authorities to hold this event and that all shipping, commercial and pleasure shall be notified about the event. The Armed Forces of Malta will be kindly giving their assistance on the day of the event.

REGISTRATION

All registrations have to be made on the official registration form available on this site and submitted electronically to the email address of the organisers – maltacomino@spr.com.mt. The organisers retain the right to refuse any registration without having to give the reason for such a decision to the applicant. The registration shall only be deemed to have been accepted when the requisite fee has been paid.

A RECENT MEDICAL CERTIFICATE MUST BE PROVIDED WITH THE REGISTRATION FORM.

The registration fee for the swim only shall be €55. Non-Maltese residents can book a package for accommodation and land transport directly with the organisers and will have their registration fee included in the total price of the package.

The closing date for registration is 26th September 2019. The organisers reserve the right to stop accepting registrations before the closing date should number of applications reach the limit set by the said organisers.

WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT

The starting time will be 9.00 am on the 28th September 2019. All swimmers have to be at the starting point in Little Armier Bay by not later than 8.45am. Late arrivals will be allowed to participate ONLY at the discretion of the organisers. Starting will be staggered in groups and as advised on the day by the event referee.

All swimmers can leave their bags that should be clearly identifiable as belonging to the said swimmer.

EVENT RULES

All swimmers will provide their own swimming cap that can be white, yellow, orange or red. SWIMMERS NOT WEARING CAPS IN THESE COLOURS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE PART IN THE EVENT. Sponsors names are allowed as long as the above mentioned colours remain predominant.

Participants need not hold any registration with a swimming club or federation.

All types of bathing costumes are allowed.

The event referee will be in charge of ensuring the smooth running of the race and shall be the sole arbitror in case of dispute. His decision will be final.

The timing of the event will be done by professional time keepers who will be solely responsible for issuing the race results and times.

Any swimmer who obstructs or intentionally comes into contact with a fellow swimmer shall be disqualified.

Swimmers who in the opinion of the event referee are committing a breach of the rules will be warned by means of a yellow flag.

Swimmers will be shown a red flag if in the opinion of the race referee they should be disqualified.

Swimmers cannot be accompanied by a boat. All safety measures and equipment shall be provided by the organizers.

PAYMENT

For holders of a Maltese bank account. Either by cheque payable to Risso Waterpolo Camp drawn on a Maltese bank or by bank transfer. Cheques to be sent to Pallanuoto Camp,  10, Tal-Abatija, L/O Mgarr, Malta MGR 1760 accompanied by the registration form and medical certificate.

PRIZES

All participants will be given a commemorative medal for taking part in the event together with an event T-shirt. For those who take part in the competitive event, prizes will be given to the top three male and female swimmers.

ABANDONMENT OF THE EVENT

The organisers reserve the right to abandon the event if in their opinion the conditions, for whatever reason, present a danger to the participants. In this eventuality the following procedure will be followed:

The safety personnel will blow whistles to draw the attention of the swimmers

The swimmers will stop immediately and follow all the instructions issued by the safety personnel

Once on dry land all swimmers will gather at a mustering point for a roll call to ensure that all participants are safe

IMAGE RIGHTS

By taking part in this event all participants are expressly authorising the organisers to make use of still photography and video images of the pre and post-event activities as well as the event itself free of charge and allow said images to be used in any form of media.

DECLARATION

By submitting a registration form participants acknowledge that they have read and understood the above rules and that they undertake to participate in a spirit of friendship, sportsmanship and that they will abide by the instructions issued by the organisers at all times.

 

SPR TRAVEL, AS ORGANISER RESERVES THE RIGHT TO ALTER THESE RULES SHOULD THEY DEEM NECESSARY FOR THE COMFORT AND SAFETY OF ALL PARTICIPANTS, WHO WILL BE DULY INFORMED BY EMAIL OF SAID CHANGES. ONLY COMMUNICATION BY EMAIL IS TO BE DEEMED AS OFFICIALLY ISSUED BY THE ORGANISERS.
